Legally acceptable reasons not to hire a candidate

Employers are told reasons they cannot legally use to decline to employ a candidate (age, sex, disability and religion, for example).  Are you looking for legally acceptable reasons not to hire a candidate?  Here’s a list:

  • Lack of technical skills
  • Unprofessional presentation
  • Poor communication skills
  • Work history is unsatisfactory/inconsistent
  • Customer service experience is limited or poor customer service skills
  • Spoke unprofessionally about last employer
  • Does not demonstrate sense of urgency
  • Wage expectations unrealistic for position
  • Availability does not meet company needs
  • Not a match based on career goals/interests
  • Did not demonstrate ability to perform as a team player
